The TASKIZAK DOCKYARD

Fatih Sultan Mehmet built the Taskizak Dockyard in 1455. It had been developed rapidly during the rise of Ottoman Empire. In the sultanate of Suleyman the Magnificent, the capacity the dockyard had reached the construction of 300 ships. extending from Haskoy to Azapkapi it became one of the biggest dokyard in the world. The Ottmoman Navy, which made Mediterranen as an Ottoman lake, was built at Taskizak Dockyard. In this dockyard which showed many developments during the last five centuries, the construction of ships with steam engine and ships with iron body was started at the same time as others. In1827 the first floating dry dock and the first ship with steam engine, in 1886 the first two submarines named as Abdulhamit and Abdulmecid were produced in this dockyard. After the occupation of Istanbul and freeing it from soldiers after the World War I, the TaskizakDockyard was closed down. The existing machines and workbenches were transferred to Golcuk and a new dockyard was established there. After the agreements aboutthe straits (Basphorusand Dardanelles). The Taskizak Dokyard was started to workin 1941, with a few engineers and workers. But this time repairing ships and constructing small ships were maintained. After the year 1960, new workshops were added and some of old buildings of the dockyard were resterauted. Today it is a modern Forces.dockyard producing shipsfor the Turkish Navy.
