Paris Agreement was signed by the Ottoman Empire, France, England, Sardinya-Piemonte and Russia (3rd March 1856). It is the only treaty that the Ottoman Empire signed as the winning-side, in the nineteenth century. In the war of Crimea, the Ottoman Empire defeated Russia with the support of the European states. Russia was forced to sign an agreement based on the articles of Vienna Agreement. The peace negotiations started, on 25th February 1856, in Paris. The Ottoman Empire, France, England, Sardinya,Piemonte, Russia, Austria, Prussia took part in these negotiations. Paris Agreement had 34 articles and a provisional article. Some important articles of the agreement as below; Russia would have retreated from Kars and other territories of the Ottoman Empire, she occupied during the war. The countries signed the agreement, accepted to respect the unity and the independence of the Ottoman Empire, moreover, they have approved to consider the Ottoman Empire as a part of Europe. They would have not inferred the internal administrations of the empire. The Black Sea would have been neutralised and the Ottoman government would have not had any dockyards in this sea. Russia would have left Baserabya and this region will be given to Moldavia. Wallachia and Moldavia would have been independent in their internal issues, but they would have accepted the Ottoman supremacy. |
