"Azeb" is a military term, means the light infantries and marines. It means “bachelor” in Arabic. In the 14th and the 16th centuries; in the Byzantine, the Latin, and the Italian sources "pirate and sea pirate" terms were used, to explain the word “azeb”. And also, in Egypt a group of soldiers; responsible to guard the cities were called by this name. In the Ottoman Empire “azebs” were organised, before the Yeniceri Corps; as an archery troop. They were divided into two, as the infantry and the marine azebs. Infantry Azebs, by the middle of the 16th century begun to be used for the citadel protection. So they became a waged group. The numbers the azebs were depending on the importance of the citadels. Marine azebs were divided into two as; the dockyard Azebs and naval azebs, according to their duty locations. Marine Azebs; were on duty at galleys, at pasha's ships, at barges, at artilleries, rocks and horse ships. Also, they were being as sailors, sentry or rowers. To be taken as an azeb; a person should had been very strong and should have had a capacity for fighting. Azeb organisation was abolished during the military reforms of Sultan Mahmut II. | ||
