AYNALI KAVAK AGREEMENT

An agreement signed between the Ottoman Empire and Russia on 21st March 1779. With the agreement of Kucuk Kaynarca, signed in 21st July 1774, Russia accepted the independence of Crimea.

While, the European countries were busy with the wars in the North America; Tsarina Caterina II found the chance, to invade Crimea. So, the Khan of Crimea, Devlet Giray IV took refuge to the Ottoman Empire. Sahin Giray a favourer of Russia had came to the Crimean throne. The Tatars revolted against his accession. The Ottomans sent Selim Giray and his supporters to Crimea. Russia suppressed the revolt and the Ottoman Empire wanted to her to leave Crimea. Thus, with the mediation of France and United Kingdom; the Ottomans and Russian delegates assembled and they signed a new agreement in the Aynali Kavak Palace, in Istanbul. According to this agreement the Ottomans recognised Sahin Giray’s sovereignty but their the future khans would have taken the approval of the Ottoman Sultan. In the Mediterranean and the Black Sea the trade privileges given to France and United Kingdom; would also be given to Russia. The Russian forces would have retreated from Crimea. With this agreement, the independence of Crimea was approved.
